How do I port my number over if I've already cancelled my account w/ my current provider?

So I cancelled with my existing provider and the last service date will be the 12th. Can I still retain my old number if I pay for a mint mobile account a week after that? Is it a different procedure than usual? Thank you.

You have to port your number while your existing account is still active. If your existing account is closed before the number is ported, you lose the number.
