Travel to Colombia for 3 months

Is it better to get a local SIM card in Colombia or use the roaming feature of Mint Mobile (purchased in US), for a 3 month period?

What are the approximate monthly roaming charges with a very limited use of the phone - perhaps a handful of whatsapp messages a day, 3-4 phone calls per week?

Any guidance/advice appreciated -

Thank you,

Seems the consensus is to get a local sim. Service isn’t as wide spread as a string and 2 cans.

@Treker2 Thank you. Is it possible to purchase SIM cards for the destination country from US? Or is it better to just wait and purchase it on arrival at the airport? Thank you,

Trip advisor has some info:

I tried to use the Mint Mobile roaming feature on a cruise to the Caribbean. I followed all of the instructions but roaming worked in 0 out of 4 countries. I could receive texts but whenever I tried to send one I got the response that message blocking was active. There seemed to be nothing I could do to turn it off. My partner has the same model of iPhone and the same service but she did not get the message blocking response, so there must be some issue with my account or SIM card. That’s not to say that roaming worked perfectly for her either. The only person who seemed to get her texts did not have an iPhone. So now I have international roaming credit on my account that is apparently worthless. I am going to Canada in September and it would be great if I could text there but I don’t have high hopes.
